Intentional TonicMan Hands (Apr 2015)
April is Limb Loss Awareness Month. JR and I were joking that we wish that people were a little less aware of my missing limb! Ha Ha Ha. But, on that note, here is a link to a great article on prosthetics for women, or the lack thereof. If nothing else, read it because of the clever title, “Man Hands.”
Now, I’m going to ask each of you to take action. Prosthetists and others have been lobbying on behalf of the O&P profession for the last several weeks in Washington, DC. There are several bills supporting prosthetists that are on the table for consideration by both the Senate and House. The bills will help address many of the challenges prosthetists face in the healthcare environment. They propose policies such as having CMS recognize the Orthotist’s and Prosthetist’s notes as part of the medical record which in turn will improve the ability to get approval for prosthetics. Currently, prosthetists, in many cases, will wait for the physician notes and this delays patients from getting prostheses.
I would like to ask that you make your support visible by asking your Senators and Representatives to support key legislation. Doing so should take less than 5 minutes and will help make a positive impact. AOPA (AOPAvotes.org) has created direct links to two template letters that you can submit with two clicks. All you need to do is fill in your name and home address, click the blue button “VIEW RECIPIENTS”, and then click the blue button at the bottom of the page “SEND MESSAGE”. You can simply send the template letter as is, or you can customize it with your own message.
Done and done. I wish this wasn’t still such a big deal. One would think, in 2015, we’d be more advanced than this.
